The European Commission has adopted the Communication Strategic guidelines for a more sustainable and competitive EU aquaculture for the period 2021-2030

Since 2013, the farming of fish and seafood (aquaculture) in the EU has been subject to a set of EU-wide strategic guidelines, which set out standard priorities and targets, to ensure the sector is run and developed sustainably. On 12 May 2021 the European Commission has adopted the Communication Strategic guidelines for a more sustainable and competitive EU aquaculture for the period 2021-2030.

This Communication, which is part of the initiatives contributing to the European Green Deal and, more particularly, the Farm to Fork strategy, updates the guidelines, in line with relevant recent developments. This strategy recognises the important potential of sustainable aquaculture as a low carbon source of food and feed to contribute to the acceleration of the transition to an EU sustainable food system.

The revision will also help EU countries update their multiannual aquaculture plans.
