Aquaculture Congress 2024 – Defining a Resilient Future
Jun 25, 2024PRESS RELEASE
An established event in the international aquaculture community, the Aquaculture Congress 2024 returns for the third year in Athens, themed “Defining a Resilient Future.” On June 28 and 29, at the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre, top speakers will address the challenges, developments, trends, and needs of the sector to ensure sustainability for its future, through a rich agenda focused on outward orientation and dynamic partnerships.
Organized by AMBIO S.A., with the support of the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization (HAPO) and the scientific support of the Agricultural University of Athens, the Congress is under the auspices of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, the Ministry of Environment and Energy, and the Ministry of Development.
The Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization (HAPO), the main body for the development of Greek aquaculture, and an active member of the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers, actively highlights its extroverted orientation, development prospects through synergies, and international character, making it a strong player and reliable partner both in Greece and abroad.
The Aquaculture Congress 2024 is the third in a series of successful industry congresses held in 2018 and 2022, having now established itself as a key event in the international aquaculture community.
The 3rd Congress aims to address the factors that will lead to “A Resilient Future.” The shocks from the pandemic period, which have not yet fully subsided, the challenges posed by climate change, and geopolitical shifts require comprehensive planning and the modification or adaptation of policies in all areas. These include the completion of spatial planning, modernization of production, processing, transport, marketing, and the development of an integrated strategy for the growth of the sector.
Aquaculture seeks to ensure sustainable investments, continue to promote environmentally responsible practices to combat climate change, and adopt innovative solutions and new technologies that will secure its sustainability. International collaborations and partnerships, which are prominently featured on the Congress agenda, play a key role in this effort.
In the context of expanding the international collaborations of the sector, India was chosen as the honored country for 2024. The international character of the Congress is also confirmed by the presence of delegations from the embassies of China and the United Arab Emirates, as well as representation from the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy of Somalia. Lastly, the Congress will feature speakers from 15 different countries: Greece, Cyprus, India, the United Kingdom, France, Norway, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, and the United States of America.
The Congress also serves as a meeting point for producers, investors, and public and scientific bodies related to the sector. Representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Environment & Energy, Rural Development & Food, the General Secretariat for Research & Innovation, the Agricultural University of Athens, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, and the Hellenic Aquaculture Producers Organization will attend. European public bodies and institutions will also be present, such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus, the DG-Mare Directorate of the EU on Maritime Policy & Blue Economy (MARE.A), the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP), and the Spanish Aquaculture Business Association (APROMAR).
In the specially designed foyer of the Megaron, there will be 31 sponsor booths representing 11 countries: Greece, France, Portugal, India, Norway, Italy, Iceland, Israel, Denmark, Germany, and the USA. Additionally, four industry associations and 43 production companies from the aquaculture sector will be represented. The presence of significant companies from other sectors (feeds, cages – nets, boat construction, technology, medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, production and packaging machinery, insurance, etc.) as sponsors highlights the substantial impact of aquaculture on the overall national economy.
The Aquaculture Congress 2024, given the current circumstances, is considered particularly significant for Greek aquaculture, as it demonstrates its dynamism and international character. The participation and interaction of all involved parties are essential to achieve coordination and promote responsible and innovative practices that will ensure a sustainable and resilient future for the sector.
